Week 1 - Introduction to choreography

Wednesday 11th September

We started the class with improvisation, beginning lying flat on our backs and gradually increasing level and energy/force in our movements, moving onto knees doing floor work and rolls and then coming up to standing and introducing turns, jumps, kicks and leaps. We then did a similar task across the room, starting on a low level, then mid-level to high level increasing energy level in the different stages adding more power in the jumps, kicks and leaps than into the floor work.

We then had another improvisation task where we had to make a motif out of the letters of our name using different body parts. We developed this to have different dynamics based off an adjective. I used the word bright so I made my movements more powerful and jumped higher, making my arm movements sharp and dynamic. We also did a task in which every number from our phone number equated to a different movement. 0 was a shunt, 1 was stillness, 2 was a jump, 3 was a turn, 4 was off balance, 5 was a roll, 6 was a swing, 7 was a kick, 8 was a change in direction and 9 was any of them. We then developed this sequence by joining it to the name motif and changing the dynamics by using the idea or impact, release or impulse to one of the sequences to add contrast. I chose to add impulse to add contrast between the sharp and soft movements to add more dynamic qualities.

To improve my improvisation, I need to try and be more inventive with ideas and be more open to different styles and potentially try to add more elevation in jumps and power behind kicks and make arms more fluid. Furthermore, I need to try and show the contrast between impact an impulse within my movements. To develop further I should try and project and perform my movements to maximum ability, which would make me feel more confident.

  1. The descriptions of the creative tasks completed within the lesson are detailed and comprehensive. I am pleased you have attempted to uploaded a video to detail what I assume is the two different phrases, however I would recommend revisiting this as after attempting to play it does not appear to work. Please use the post I uploaded on my blog if you need help uploading the video.
After uploading, it would be beneficial to include a sentence or two connecting the blogs content to the videos so the reader can clearly understand what they portray. You do not have to limit yourself to one video – multiple videos and referencing could help illustrate each task.
Upon revisiting this post, reread the task within my blog and ensure you remain focused on the questions. Just a paragraph or two about how the creative process made you feel, also the different strengths and weaknesses you will encounter during this module will answer these. You could then develop this by discussing how your strengths assisted you within the task and how you will improve the potential weaknesses over the module.
It is good practice to expand on the task that is set, try to think about what you have created, going into detail of why you might have incorporated certain movements and the purpose of the tasks.
Overall, some very good aspects within the post, I look forward to reading the improvements and watching your videos.

    1. Thank you for your comment, I have reviewed the video and it now works! In the video I am demonstrating my name motif which I joined to my phone number motif. I really enjoyed this creative process as I had never done anything like it before so it was quite exciting, although quite challenging at times when I lacked imagination! A strength I think I had within this task is that I managed to create two motifs which showed the intention of the task. However, a weakness I had within this task, as mentioned before, was lacking imagination and overthinking the movement. In the future I aim to incorporate more improvisation sessions within my creative process to help me be more open minded with the movement I create. Overall, the movement in my name motif was a lot more abstract as I was attempting to use different body parts to represent the letters whereas the phone number motif was a lot more structures due to having rules to follow, but I really enjoyed both tasks.

  2. I really liked the change in dynamics in your choreography, especially when you had a moment of stillness and then went into a jump, this really shows a change in dynamics and light and shade within your piece. In your blog, you spoke about the improvisation tasks, did you enjoy this? And what were the challenges when you did the improvisation task?

    1. I did enjoy this task as it pushed me out of my comfort zone as I've never done anything like it before. I struggled at times as I was overthinking the movement but once I overcame that the movement came a lot easier. Overall, I really liked the task and having different rules to follow.
