Week 2 - Choreographic Devices
Wednesday 18th September
During lesson 2 were shown different choreographic devices
and how they could be used. We developed our previous motifs of either our name
or our number and combined the motifs in pairs to form a sequence. We were
given the task to identify any choreographic devices we had already used within
our sequence and then we had to develop further by using 4 different
choreographic devices and be able to explain where we used them. My partner and
I decided to use repetition, retrograde, inversion and canon. By doing this we
added more contrast into our motifs and increased the length just by editing
and re using motifs.
We then made up a motif using adjectives that describes our
zodiac sign. I’m a Sagittarius so the strengths of my sign are insightful, superior,
rational, brave, beautiful, lively, lovely and optimistic. The weaknesses of my
sign are forgetful, careless and rash. I based my motif from the words using
them as inspiration for gestures, steps and dynamics. For example, the word
lively, I included jumps, for careless I included movements where I threw my
arms rather than carefully placing them. I also used an arm gesture that goes
around my face to indicate the word beautiful.
I decided to use embellishment, by adding my ‘beautiful’ arm
gesture that I used at the beginning of my motif and added it to other movements.
I also used argumentation by changing the timing of the breathes/ back bends by
doing on quickly and one really slowly which further adds contrast to my movements.
I used repetition by repeating the jump sequence to enhance the intention of
the word ‘lively’ and also fragmentation by adding the ‘careless’ arms into
other movements.
To further improve my motif, I would develop the use of
choreographic devices and potentially include a few more or just refine the
developments I’ve already made to ensure my intention of showing the zodiac
traits is fully shown.
I have shown the descriptions of the different choreographic devices in the photos below.

This is not a bad start to your week 2 post!
ReplyDeletePlease title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices
Please think about the following points:
- More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
- What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
- How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set?
- Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
- What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?
What you have written about your zodiac task is good.
Think about:
- Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
- How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
- How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
- Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
I can see you have tried to upload videos however I would recommend revisiting these as after attempting to play them they do not appear to work. Please use the post I uploaded on my blog if you need help uploading the videos.
Please remember to link your videos in your writing, so as a reader there is a clear connection.
You have included interesting points, well done!
Miss Norman
Thank you for your comment! I have inserted a photo of the choreographic devices hand out to help include more detail on them. The purpose of adding choreographic devices is to develop the movement within motifs, make them more interesting and to extend them. By using them within this task it helped introduce the different devices to us so we will be able to use them in our future choreography. The integration of these devices (we used repetition, retrograde, inversion and canon) made our motif longer but also made it more exciting to watch by the audience. A strength I had within this task was that I was able to successfully add four choreographic devices to our original motif to develop it. A weakness I had was our motif didn't have any contrasting dynamics or levels so to improve this I would add impact/impulse to some movements and try and use the floor more. We decided to use canon and inversion as they work really well within a duet and can't be used in a solo. We used repetition to link the movements together and finally we used retrograde to challenged ourselves to reverse the motif. Performing in front of the class was very useful as we were able to gain feedback from our peers so we can make improvements.
DeleteZodiac Task-
From feedback I was given from peers, the traits of my zodiac sign were clearly seen throughout the motif I created meaning that I was successful with the task that was set. I was happy about this as I had tried to exaggerate the different traits, especially 'beautiful' by using hand gestures. The extra time allowance allowed me to develop the motif further and try to link all movements and developments to the traits of my zodiac sign. I used embellishment, argumentation and repetition within this motif. By doing this I was able to add some contrasting dynamics as I would do one movement really slowly and the next quicker, or one very softly and the next very sharp to add a clear juxtaposition. Overall, I really enjoyed this task as I liked being able to almost personify the traits of the zodiac and it challenged me to consider the use of gestures. A strength I had was that I was successful with the task set. A weakness I had was I could've emphasised the use of embellishment more within the developed motif.
I really like the layout of your blog, it is very clear. Also, I like that you have expanded on your zodiac routine by adding choreographic devices. How did you find this creative task?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this creative task as I liked creating movements based on the different traits and characteristics of my zodiac sign. I also enjoyed using facial expressions and gestures within the choreography.
DeleteI loved reading your blog as you have explored each task in great detail. Also, you have explored the choreographic devices within your pieces and incorporated them within your tasks. What were your strengths and weaknesses during this task?
ReplyDeleteA strength I had was that I was successful with the task set as my intentions were clear to my peers who were watching. A weakness I had was I could've emphasised the use of embellishment more within the developed motif.
DeleteI really love how much detailed you have gone into when exploring each task I found that this made it a lot easier to follow your choreographic processes, as well as using separate videos to enhance this. I just wondered what you thought your strengths of the piece were and how this made you feel, as well as your weeknesse4s and how you may overcome these.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching this blog well done!!

DeleteI really like the examples you gave when discussing your zodiac phrase and which movement portrayed what word. Do you think you would use a similar approach of creating movement when it comes to your solo piece?
ReplyDeleteYes, I am aiming to try and use this approach within my solo as it is based on dementia, I am going to attempt to use movements and gestures to represent the symptoms of dementia such as confusion and memory loss.
DeleteYour blog layout is very clear and I thought it was interesting to see the changes you had made to your duet. You can see the devices you've used clearly and they really add to the piece. As your zodiac solo also shows a clear link between your traits and movements.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
