Week 12 – Final Performance Evaluation

Overall, I was quite happy with how the choreography assessment went, I felt like I was able to show the emotion I set out to portray, using facial expressions. Furthermore, I also feel like I acted on my feedback I was given from my studio performance and I was able to add more weight to my movement which made my choreography have a heavier, more dynamic feel. At the beginning I wanted to achieve a solo which would portray a storyline through facial expressions and also one which had the use of repetition to link to my stimulus. I think I was successful with this as my solo had a lot of repeated movements such as contractions and leaps, incorporating different arms and dynamics to also use the choreographic device argumentation. This was very clear within my solo, especially as the beginning motif of my solo is also repeated at the end although it has been altered slightly for the ending position. Overall, I found the whole process challenging at times but also quite fun. One difficulty I faced was that I occasionally had mental blanks which prevented me from being able to create new material. I overcame this by having sessions in my free time where I would just listen to the music multiple times to grasp nuances in the music for potential highlights. I also used improvisation to help me overcome this as my chosen practitioner Wayne McGregor uses a lot of improvisation. Incorporating this into my work not only helped me create new, unique material, it also allowed me to include my chosen practitioner into my choreographic technique. If I was to do this solo differently in the future I would probably manage my time better to ensure I had enough time to fully learn my solo before the studio performance, also I think I would use different music that had a stronger dynamic to it so I could emphasise the dynamics and complement the music rather than contrasting. If I was to perform on stage, I would consider a different costume such as a dress, to portray a character more. I would also reconsider the spacing of the dance in relation to the lighting available on the stage. I would use a white light going from upstage left to downstage right which could imply the idea of hope, like the light at the end of a tunnel. I would then adapt my dance to a pathway following the light. This process has left me feeling quite proud of myself for being able to compete the task successfully and met the criteria for the learning outcomes.
