Week 6 – Final Idea
I have chosen to use the DNA stimulus for my choreography solo. A
lot of different factors influenced me to use this, one reason was that I have
quite a lot of knowledge on DNA due to taking A Level Biology and have a lot of
interest in DNA. Additionally, I liked the idea of creating a solo around the
DNA stimulus because there was multiple pathways for narratives and creative
processes. I’ve decided to create my solo based around the idea of dementia
which is primarily caused from Alzheimer’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disease
causing brain cells to die. When the brain cells die, the DNA is broken down
which means they are no longer useful, causing the symptoms related to
dementia. These include memory loss, disorientation, low control of emotions,
language problems and decreased judgement due to damage to nerve cells within
the brain.
I have a few initial movement ideas,
stemming from my biological knowledge on DNA which can link to choreographic
devices within my dance. For example, DNA is replicated by Semi-Conservative
DNA replication in which the original DNA strand is replicated and contains one
original DNA strand and one new DNA strand. This could link to the
choreographic device fragmentation because I could use half of one motif and
half of a different one to make a new hybrid motif. Furthermore, DNA strands
run anti-parallel to each other which could link to the use of retrograde or
reversing movement. I also aim to use repetition within my dance as DNA is
replicated rapidly many times, but also because people with dementia suffer
with memory loss so the use of repetition may also portray memory loss. With
regards to structure, I think I’ll use an ABA structure to show a clear story line within my solo.
I have chosen to choreograph my solo to ‘Night’ by Ludovico Einaudi. I’ve chosen this music because it’s got a repetitive beat which can link to my stimulus as a symptom of dementia is memory loss so the repetitive beat can help show the idea of this. Also the music has a clear structure, it starts slow, speeds up and then slows down again which will help me structure my dance and add dynamics. I need to choose my music first and choreograph after because I’m
going to choreograph using Wayne McGregor’s method of finding the music and
choreographing a dance to the music based on the way the body reacts to the music.

This blog is really good and goes into a lot of detail of your final stimulus idea. Additionally, i find it really interesting the fact you have linked your knowledge of DNA from your a-level biology as it gives you another aspect of choreographing. The idea of using Wayne Mcgregor's process to interpret your own ideas. How do you plan to create movement linking to this?
ReplyDeleteI plan to use his process of creating a movement based from the letters in a word. By using this I have to create a phrase which represents the word 'Dementia' so my theme can be clearly shown while also incorporating his creative processes.
DeleteI really liked how much depth your research is on your chosen stimulus and how your already have movement ideas in mind. You mention above a choreographic device that links to your research, is there any other devices that you think you may use when it comes to choreographing your solo?
ReplyDeleteOther than fragmentation, I am to use repetition and retrograde. DNA strands run anti-parallel to each other which could link to the use of retrograde or reversing movement. I also aim to use repetition within my dance as DNA is replicated rapidly many times, but also because people with dementia suffer with memory loss so the use of repetition may also portray memory loss.
DeleteFantastic explanation of the structure you want to follow within your solo, this will hopefully benefit you as the weeks progress. You have also gone into detail describing what music and choreographic devices you will use and how these will enhance your piece, well done! Further, discuss what you hope to achieve/ portray to the audience. Consider what research you will undertake to add greater depth to your piece and how your research will affect your movement. What emotion would you like to portray within your piece?
ReplyDeleteWithin this solo I hope to portray a narrative of a person with dementia and how it affects their life, starting as a healthy person and deteriorating throughout the piece. I aim to do this through using gestures and facial expressions to show the story. I will take further research into the symptoms such as memory loss to gain a greater understanding, also do more research the mental effects of dementia and how they can impact someone. This further knowledge will allow me to display the emotions accurately and help create phrases based from the symptoms. I want to try and portray a sad emotion to link to the symptom of depression, getting more sad as the piece goes on.
